Register residence
When you move to a new home in Vienna, you must register your address within 3 days at any Meldeservice (registration office) in the city. This applies to all residents regardless of citizenship. Registration is free and confirms your official residence.
How it works — step by step
- Complete the Meldezettel (residence registration form) — each person needs their own copy, fully filled out
- Obtain signatures from yourself and your accommodation provider (landlord or property manager) on the form
- Gather your original documents: passport or travel document + birth certificate (Austrian citizens bring birth certificate only)
- If you have a rental or purchase contract, bring a copy
- Visit any Meldeservice in Vienna's district offices (Magistratische Bezirksämter) and submit your completed form and documents
- The office verifies your documents and enters your address in the Central Register
- Receive your confirmation letter (Bestätigung der Meldung) as proof of registration
What you need
- Completed and signed Meldezettel (registration form)
- Valid passport, travel document, or ID Austria card
- Birth certificate (original or certified copy)
- For foreign citizens: valid travel document or current asylum procedure card
- Proof of accommodation (rental contract, purchase contract, or current land register extract)
- For minors under 18: parent or guardian must register them with proof of custody
- Additional documents may be requested if data conflicts arise
Frequently asked questions
Can someone register for me if I'm busy?
Yes. Another person can bring your documents on your behalf — no power of attorney is needed. You can also send documents by registered mail (RSb), though the office cannot guarantee against loss.
Can I register online?
If you are an adult with an ID Austria or EU-Login account and this is NOT your first registration in Austria, you can register online through the federal registration application. You can also register your own minor children if they are currently registered with you at your previous residence.
What if I don't register within 3 days?
If you fail to register, the Meldeservice may register you officially themselves. It's legally required, so registration is strongly advised. Non-Austrian citizens should also check their residence law (Aufenthaltsrecht) obligations.
